Gran Bretaña: la Royal Navy recluta gays y
lesbianas
Contradiciendo su historial homofóbico, es la primera de las fuerzas
militares inglesas que lanza un programa en este sentido. La convocatoria fue
publicada en varios sitios gays británicos.
La Royal Navy es la
primera de las fuerzas militares británicas que hace publicidad para reclutar
personal militar homosexual. Para ello, acaba de lanzar un programa en acuerdo
con el grupo de derechos de homosexuales “Stonewall”. La idea es promover el
tratamiento digno e igualitario de reclutas militares gays, lesbianas y
bisexuales. De este modo, todas las parejas del mismo sexo registradas
legalmente en el país que se unan a la Royal Navy, podrán pedir habitaciones
dobles en la misma base militar.
Una ley aprobada en 2000, permite a los
homosexuales ser legalmente incluidos en las Fuerzas Armadas. Pero es la primera
vez que la decisión de la Corte Europea de Derechos Humanos es tomada al pie de
la letra por un cuerpo de las Fuerzas Armadas británicas promocionando
abiertamente su reclutamiento. La decisión se tomó luego de que el Parlamento
británico aprobara en 2004 el Acta de Parejas Civiles, que otorga derechos
igualitarios a las parejas del mismo sexo, medida que regirá a fines de 2005.
“Estamos reclutando a gays y lesbianas en la Marina, para que haya
representación de género y sexo en las FFAA", declaró el portavoz de la Royal
Navy, Anton Hanney. “Cumpliremos con la ley. Estamos obligados a darles
tratamiento", agregó. Durante el primer año del programa entre la Royal Navy y
Stonewall, los reclutas gays y lesbianas podrán participar de seminarios y
recibirán consejos especiales. En ese sentido, el director ejecutivo de
Stonewall, Ben Summerskill, se declaró "muy optimista" por la decisión de la
Royal Navy, y pidió a la Armada y a la Royal Air Force (RAF) que sigan el mismo
camino.
"Creemos que la Royal Navy ha sido muy valiente en aprobar estas
medidas y darlas a conocer públicamente. Nos enorgullece esta decisión noble y
humana", sostuvo. Por su parte, el vicealmirante Sir James Burnell-Nugent,
declarado abiertamente homosexual, afirmó que uno de los objetivos centrales de
la Royal Navy es hacer sentir "valorados" a todos los reclutados, mujeres y
hombres, sin importar su orientación sexual. “Estoy determinado a asegurar que
la Royal Navy tenga prácticas que incluyan a todos. Es una tontería excluir a
una gran sección de la población como potenciales reclutas”, declaró
Burnell-Nugent, quien confirmó que se han publicado anuncios en los principales
magazines gays británicos, como "Gay Times".
En tanto, el Ministerio de
Defensa en Londres informó que tanto la Armada como la RAF "mantienen su propio
punto de vista" sobre cómo asegurar igualdad de oportunidades para reclutas
homosexuales. Por ejemplo, la RAF participó en la pasada edición del "Mardi
Gras" de Londres para conseguir reclutar a gays y lesbianas, indicó el portavoz
oficial. La Marina británica, otras 90 compañías y organizaciones del país
firmaron el acuerdo con Stonewall, entre ellas la empresa nacional de teléfonos,
BT, y la de computación IBM.
